Worth the Wait: Patience Pays Off When Creating a Look to Last

Of all the tidbits interior designer Linda Kennedy shared with the owners of this Short Hills home, “be patient” proved to be the most beneficial.
And it shows.
The house, a sprawling 1930s Georgian Colonial, located on a quiet, tree-lined street, is a case study in luxury and style; a look that evolved methodically over four years. “The last thing you want is an interior that looks like it was put together all at once,” says Kennedy, who is based in Maplewood. “And you don’t want it to look like a designer did it,” she adds.
For the clients, the slow-it-down philosophy was at times difficult to adhere to. “We would go shopping and I’d see what I thought was the perfect sofa,” the wife explains. “Linda would nod quietly and move on. I’d leave the store frustrated. But a week later, I’d go back, see the same sofa and think ‘It’s all wrong . . .so glad I didn’t buy it.”
The homeowners give kudos to Kennedy for teaching them the upside of waiting, which in turn created the home of their dreams – sophisticated and welcoming with a style that will remain fresh and classic for years to come.
